A new synthesis of methyl (±)-β-(5,5,9-trimethyl-2-oxo-trans-1-decalyl)propionate (IV), a potential intermediate for the synthesis of diterpenes, is described. Syntheses and stereochemistry of the decalones encountered in this study have been dealt with.
