Products from the chlorination of naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, and several chloro-methylnaphthalenes with sulphuryl chloride

Abstract

Naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and 2-methylnaphthalene, when treated with sulphuryl chloride with or without a solvent, undergo both substitution and addition to give products similar to those obtained with molecular chlorine. The major components have been characterised; the chlorinations of 1-chloro-2-methylnaphthalene, 1-chloro-4-methylnaphthalene, and 1-chloromethylnaphthalene have also been examined. The results throw some light on the electrophilic behaviour of sulphuryl chloride.
