Some diastereoisomeric 3-methyl-4-phenylpiperidin-4-ols

Abstract

The proportions formed, and configuration of diastereoisomeric 3-methyl-4-phenylpiperidin-4-ols obtained from phenyl-lithium and a 3-methyl-4-piperidone, have been determined from proton magnetic resonance data. 3-Methyl-4-phenyl-1-propionylpiperidin-4-ol is formed as a by-product in the reaction between the lithium salt of 1-benzyl-3-methyl-4-phenylpiperidin-4-ol and propionic anhydride; related N-benzyl displacement reactions are described.
