Iodoplatinate(II) species in aqueous solution

Abstract

The tetraiodo- and aquotri-iodo-platinate(II) ions have been identified spectrophotometrically and potentiometrically, in aqueous solution, and their kinetic and thermodynamic behaviour has been studied. Reduction of hexaiodoplatinate(IV) by an equivalent of ascorbic acid produces the tetraiodo-complex, but use of an excess of the acid produces mainly the aquotri-iodo-complex. The tetraiodoplatinate(II) ion is slightly less stable towards hydrolysis than either the tetrabromo- or tetrachloro-complex. Isolation of a solid salt of the tetraiodoplatinate(II) ion has not proved possible and no such solid salt appears to have been characterised.
