Adsorption of acetanilide on mercury from aqueous solutions of sodium dihydrogen phosphate

Abstract

The adsorption of acetanilide as a typical non-electrolyte has been studied from solutions of NaH2PO4. Its behaviour can be described by a two-dimensional equation of state of the imperfect gas type with a second virial coefficient equal to twice the molecular area. The standard free energy of adsorption depends quadratically on the effective charge on the metal, if the specifically adsorbed H2PO4 is allowed for in a simple way. The adsorption of H2PO4 ion has also been studied in the presence of acetanilide. The observed effects can be explained only in a tentative way.
