Physicochemical studies of some cyclic carbonates. Part V. The alkaline hydrolysis of vinylene carbonate

Abstract

The dielectric constant and dipole moment of vinylene carbonate have been measured, and the alkaline hydrolysis of this ester in dilute aqueous ethanol has been studied. This reaction is first-order in ester concentration, and kr= 0·067 sec.–1 at 25°. A mechanism for the hydrolysis is proposed.
