The properties of trirubidium pentanitronickelate(II)

Abstract

The properties of Rb3[Ni(NO2)5] have been examined and are not consistent with a five-co-ordinate structure. The magnetic data are consistent with a broadly octahedral structure, and the electron spin resonance data indicate a marked distortion from a regular configuration. The electronic spectrum is consistent with a centrosymmetric structure involving both nitrogen and oxygen co-ordinating nitrite groups. The infrared spectrum is consistent with nitrogen-co-ordinated nitrite groups and either chelating or symmetric bridging nitrito groups. The results suggest the systematic name for the complex of trirubidium catena-µ-nitritotetranitronickelate(II).
