Aryl derivatives of nitrilotriacetic acid, and the stability of their proton and metal complexes

Abstract

The synthesis of some new C-aryl derivatives of nitrilotriacetic acid is described. Their successive acid dissociation constants and the stability constants of complexes with Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, and Zn2+, valid for 20°C and µ= 0·1M (KCl), are reported and discussed in terms of inductive and other factors. All stabilities increase in the order Ba2+ < Sr2+ < Mg2+ < Ca2+ < Zn2+.
