The evaluation of equilibrium constants and extinction coefficients for weak charge-transfer complexes. Part II

Abstract

Evidence is given in favour of an earlier theory of competitive solvation for weak charge-transfer complexes, i.e., those complexes for which the equilibrium constants obtained from a Benesi–Hildebrand plot are less than unity. It is also suggested that, in order fully to explain results obtained from optical measurements, the participation of 2:1 complexes must be taken into account. A non-optical technique has been re-analysed, and it is found that the discrepancies between results obtained from non-optical and optical methods can be successfully accounted for if this competitive solvation and the participation of 2:1 complexes is included in the theories for both techniques.
