Telomerization of styrene with bromotrichloromethane

Abstract

The photo-initiated reactions between styrene and bromotrichloromethane have been studied at temperatures between 17 and 45°C. The products have been analyzed by gel permeation chromatography and the relative proportions of some of the individual telomers have been estimated. Values of the transfer constants for the smaller radical intermediates have been obtained and compared with values derived from elemental analysis. The results show a considerable increase in the size of the transfer constant over the first few propagation steps of the reaction. Some Arrhenius parameters have been determined and compared with those for similar systems.
