Concurrent ion-molecule reactions. Part 4.—Reactions in mixtures of ammonia and water with deuterium and methane

Abstract

The concurrent ion-molecule reactions in mixtures of ammonia and water with deuterium and methane have been studied using the ratio plot method. The following reactions have been detected in mixtures with ammonia and their cross-sections and rate constants determined at 10.5 V cm–1 repeller field strength : NH+3+ NH3→NH+4+ NH2; NH+3+ D2→NH3D++ D; D+2+ NH3D++ D; D+2+ NH3→D2H++ NH2; CD+4+ NH3→CD4H++ NH2; CD+4+ CD4→CD+5+ CD3. In mixtures of deuterium and methane with water the following reactions have been studied and cross-sections and rate constants determined : H2O++ D2→H2OD++ D; D+2+ H2O →H2OD++ D; D+2+ D2→D+3+ D. H2O++ CH4→H3O++ CH3; CH+4+ H2O →H3O++ CH3. These results have been compared with those reported for other mixtures and with the theoretical results calculated on the basis of the ion-induced dipole model.
