Synthesis, characterization and oxidizing strength of a nano-structured hypervalent iodine(v) compound: iodylbenzene nanofibers
Abstract
In this study, disproportionation of freshly synthesized iodosylbenzene in boiling distilled water in the presence of triethylene glycol monomethyl ether was used to prepare ribbon-like iodylbenzene nanostructures with a wide length distribution (250 nm up to several microns) and a width in the range of 100–200 nm. SEM, AFM, EDX, DLS, IR and NMR spectroscopy and CHN analysis were used to characterize the nanostructures. A plate-like morphology previously observed for the non-uniform iodosylbenzene nanostructures synthesized using the same stabilizer shows that the oligomerization and particle growth are more controllable in the case of iodylbenzene. The comparative oxidation of 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene to juglone with bulk and nano-sized iodylbenzene revealed a ca. 8 fold increase in the oxidizing strength of the latter in a non-catalytic reaction.
