Excimers in organic electronics

Abstract

Excimers are aggregates of two atoms or molecules that can only form and exist in the excited state. They were discovered more than half a century ago. Since then they have been used with great success in industrial scale lasing applications and as molecular rulers in biotechnology. Conversely, excimers have been frequently described as detrimental for applications in organic electronics, since they can quench the fluorescence of emitter materials in organic light emitting diodes and act as terminal losses in organic solar cells. This focus article will present the recent progress in the understanding of excimer states and advantages of excimers in organic electronic applications.
