Synthesis and molecular hyperpolarisabilities of donor–acceptor bipyridyl metal complexes (M=Re, Zn, Hg)

Abstract

A series of rhenium(I), zinc(II) and mercury(II) complexes of π-donor-substituted vinyl bipyridines [donor=4-R2N–C6H4–; 4-RO–C6H4–; (C5H5)Fe(C5H4–); (C5H5)Ru(C5H4–)] has been prepared and characterized by 1H NMR and UV-visible spectroscopy. The second-order nonlinear optical properties of bipyridyl ligands and of their complexes have been investigated using EFISH experiments at 1.34 µm. A significant increase of the molecular hyperpolarizability β is observed upon coordination. The role of the nature of both the donor group and the metallic moiety on the NLO properties is discussed in detail. Synthèse et hyperpolarisabilite′s mole′culaires de complexes "‘donneur–accepteur’' à ligands bipyridines (M=Re, Zn, Hg). Divers complexes de rhe′nium(I), zinc(II) et mercure(II) à ligands vinyl-bipyridines substitue′s par des groupements π-donneurs [donneur=4-R2N–C6H4–; 4-RO–C6H4–; (C5H5)Fe(C5H4–); (C5H5)Ru(C5H4–)] ont e′te′ synthe′tise′s et caracte′rise′s par spectroscopies RMN 1H et UV-visible. Les proprie′te′s optiques non-line′aires du second-ordre des ligands bipyridyles et de leurs complexes ont e′te′ e′tudie′es par des expe′riences EFISH à 1.34 µm. La complexation induit une augmentation significative du coefficient d'hyperpolarisabilite′ mole′culaire β. Le rôle de la nature du groupement donneur et de l'entite′ me′tallique sur les proprie′te′s ONL est discute′.
