Energetic mono and dianionic 5-dinitromethyltetrazolate salts, prepared by combining stoichiometric amounts (1 : 1 or 1 : 2 mol ratio) of 5-dinitromethyltetrazole and various azoles and amines, exhibit thermodynamic properties as well as detonation velocities and pressures that make them competitive with some common energetic materials. Aminoguanidinium 5-dinitromethyltetrazolate, 2, exhibited different particle shapes when crystallized from solutions of varying concentrations. Di(aminoguanidinium) 5-dinitromethyltetrazolate, 3, when treated with a solvent-diffusion process, gave nanoparticles with a branched net structure. Salts 7 and cocrystallized 10 were investigated using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
