Formation of ‘carbyne’ in the interaction of polyacetylene with potassium under high quasi-hydrostatic pressure

Abstract

The interaction of polyacetylene with potassium has been studied under quasi-hydrostatic pressure of 20–40 kbar over a wide range of temperatures. Dehydrogenation of polyacetylene has been observed on thermobaric treatment with potassium. The formation of carbyne, a linear allotropic form of carbon, has been confirmed by electron diffraction and infrared (IR) spectroscopy.
