Synthesis and phase transitions of K2MoO4

Abstract

A well crystallized K2MoO4 powder has been synthesized from an aqueous solution of KOH and (NH4)6Mo7O24 by precipitation in ethanol at room temperature and removal of ammonia. A metastable orthorhombic Phase(β′-phase) of K2MoO4 was obtained when the high-temperature hexagonal phase was cooled, and the modulated structure of the hexagonal phase was retained. When the melt of K2MoO4 was cooled a group of sharp exothermic peaks were observed, corresponding to the transition from the hexagonal phase with modulated structure (α-phase) to the room-temperature monoclinic phase (γ-phase) and to fragmentation of the sample The results are discussed on the basis of stress accumulation due to the hindrance to the α′–β′ phase t which involves a large volume shrinkage.
