O-Alkylation of 8,16-dihydroxy[2.2]metacyclophane 1 with alkyl halides in the presence of K2CO3 affords the mono-O-alkylated product 2; similar reaction in the presence of Cs2CO3 or NaH affords dialkylated product 3 in almost quantitative yield.
