Synthesis of thieno- and furo-pyrimidinethiones

Abstract

Substituted thiophens carrying adjacent amino- and cyano-groups have been converted into the corresponding pyrimidinethione derivatives in 30–70% yield by condensation with thioamides. Acylation of the thiophen followed by cyclisation in acidic solution gave the corresponding pyrimidones. The same reactions were used successfully with analogous furan compounds.
