Aspects of tautomerism. Part I. Environmental and substituent effects on the tautomerism of o-benzoyl benzoic acids

Abstract

Contrary to the common assumption, o-benzoylbenzoic acid exists as a mixture of open and cyclic forms in polar solvents. Substituent and solvent effects on this equilibrium can be described in terms of the Hammett linear free energy relationship.
