Studies in germyl chemistry. Part II. Exchange reactions of silyl and germyl halides

Abstract

The positions of equilibrium for the exchange reactions of silyl or germyl halides with hydrogen halides have been investigated over a range of temperature; the reactions are rapid at room temperature, but not fast by the n.m.r. time-scale. The equilibrium constants favour the heavier halogen bound to germanium, and the lighter bound to silicon. Exchange reactions between silyl and germyl compounds have been used to make a number of germyl compounds.
