Preparation and spectroscopic studies of some compounds with M(NO2)42– anions

Abstract

The preparations are reported of compounds containing M(NO2)42– anions, where M = MnII, CoII, CuII, or ZnII. The infrared spectra (2000–200 cm.–1) of these and the compounds K2Cd(NO2)4 and K2Hg(NO2)4 are reported, as are the electronic spectra and magnetic moments of the manganese, cobalt, and copper compounds. It is suggested that the nitrite ions are present as chelating groups in the manganese, cadmium, and mercury compounds, and as unsymmetrically bound chelate groups in Co(NO2)42–. In the copper and zinc complexes they are bonded through oxygen.
