Molten potassium thiocyanate: reactions with compounds of manganese

Abstract

The reaction of molten potassium thiocyanate with nine compounds of manganese in oxidation states VII, VI, V, IV, III, and II were studied, the speed and products of reaction being determined. Manganese in the four highest oxidation states was reduced, initially to a precipitate of brown manganese(III) oxide but ultimately to insoluble green manganese(II) sulphide, while manganese-(III) and -(II) compounds formed the latter product directly. Oxidation products of the thiocyanate ion were much more varied and included sulphur and sulphide, sulphate, thiosulphate, cyanate, cyanide, and nitrate ions.
