Dinitrogen trioxide. Part V. A spectrophotometric study of liquid mixtures of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide: the stability of liquid dinitrogen trioxide

Abstract

The visible spectra of liquid mixtures of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide have been determined over a range of temperatures. When corrected for changes in density, the spectra were temperature-independent. Further, the amount of dinitrogen trioxide present was nearly equal to the quantity of nitric oxide absorbed. Thus it appears that the only major molecular species present in this system are dinitrogen trioxide and dinitrogen tetroxide. Existing data were used to relate the stability of dinitrogen trioxide at a given temperature to the partial pressure of nitric oxide in equilibrium with the liquid. The extinction coefficients of liquid dinitrogen trioxide are reported.
