Far-infrared spectra and structure of solid tellurium(IV) chloride, bromide, and iodide

Abstract

Far-infrared spectra of the tellurium tetrahalides have been obtained by interferometry. Four strong bands were obtained in each case and these were assigned on the basis of pyramidal (C3v) units in an ionic structure TeX3+X. There is no evidence for molecular units with trigonal bipyramidal (C2v) symmetry in the solid phase.
