ATR-FTIR studies of ionic solvation and ion-pairing in dimethyl sulfoxide solutions of the alkali metal nitrates

Abstract

Ionic solvation and ion pairing were studied in solutions of lithium, sodium and potassium nitrate in dimethyl sulfoxide, using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Ion-pairing constants and apparent solvation numbers were estimated over a wide range of concentrations. Dimerization of the solvent was taken into account. The results obtained are discussed with respect to the electrolyte concentration and the properties of the cations of the electrolyte.
