Pump–probe femtosecond-laser VUV REMPI technique applied to the study of highly excited states of allyl iodide

Abstract

The pump–probe REMPI technique has been used for a study of the femtosecond dynamics of the allyl iodide (AI) molecule excited in the VUV region. The VUV radiation was produced by non-resonant quintupling of Ti : S laser radiation in the mercury vapour or xenon gas. The lifetime of the excited state (hv≈ 7.8 eV) of AI was found to be 290 ± 30 fs. The nature of the process governing this decay time is discussed.
