Entropy-supported ion-pair formation in liquid ammonia

Abstract

The concentration dependence of the electrolytic conductance of KCI, KBr, KI, KNO3 and KSCN in solution in liquid ammonia has been recorded in the temperature range 208–238 K. Computer evaluation of the experimental data led to the ion-pair formation constants K, which increase significantly with increasing temperature. ΔH° and ΔS° for the processes were calculated from the temperature dependence of K. The ΔH° and ΔS° data demonstrated that ion-pair formation in liquid ammonia is entropy-supported, with unfavourable enthalpy.
