Interchromophore interaction of the excited triplet state in poly(naphthylalkyl methacrylate) copolymer films

Abstract

Triplet Spectroscopy of naphthalene chromophores in polymer films has been performed on four series of polymers, i.e. a copolymer of 1-naphthylmethyl methacrylate with methyl methacrylate and three copolymers of 2-naphthylalkyl methacrylate (length of alkyl chain, n= 1, 2, 3) with methyl methacrylate. The naphthalene moieties did not form triplet excimers, but showed shallow trap sites, the emission spectra of which had vibrational bands and were slightly red-shifted. The energy level of the trap site depended neither on the chain length of the side chain of polymers, nor on the substituted position of naphthalene. It depended only on the concentration of the chromophore in the polymer solid.
