Likely behaviour of thermodynamic quantities for a chemical reaction in a solvent exhibiting a λ-transition, or near an ordinary critical point

Abstract

A thermodynamic analysis indicates that a maximum or minimum may be expected to be exhibited by such quantites as ΔH and ΔV for a chemical reaction in a solvent close to a λ-temperature. The treatment is extended to the case of a chemical reaction in a solvent which is close to an ordinary critical point, either liquid–vapour (for a single solvent) or for critical mixing (for a mixed solvent).
