High energy reaction kinetics using a hard-sphere model

Abstract

A model of chemical reaction is described for atom-diatom reactions above threshold energies. Using a hard-sphere approximation the model is applied to the reaction of tritium with H2, D2 and HD. The results, which compare favourably with more exact theoretical treatments, are analyzed in terms of a low energy “end on” abstraction reaction and a high energy stripping mode of reaction.
