Condensation of Ph2PH and paraformaldehyde with 2-amino-7-methyl-1,8-naphthyridine gave the new flexible tridentate ligand 2-[N-(diphenylphosphino)methyl]amino-7-methyl-1,8-naphthyridine (L). Reaction of L with [Cu(CH3CN)4]BF4 and/or different ancillary ligands in dichloromethane afforded N,P chelating or bridging luminescent complexes [(L)2Cu2](BF4)2, [(μ-L)2Cu2(PPh3)2](BF4)2 and [(L)Cu(CNN)]BF4 (CNN = 6-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine), respectively. Complexes [(L)2Pt]Cl2, [(L)2Pt](ClO4)2 and [(L)Pt(CNC)]Cl (CNC = 2,6-biphenylpyridine) were obtained from the reactions of Pt(SMe2)2Cl2 or (CNC)Pt(DMSO)Cl with L. The crystal structures and photophysical properties of the complexes are presented.
