A facile, high-yield synthesis of [Pt2(PR3)2(µ-Cl)2Cl2]

Abstract

Contrary to previous reports, Zeise's dimer, [Pt22-C2H4)2(µ-Cl)2Cl2], reacts with tertiary phosphines in refluxing toluene or tetrachloroethane to give high yields of the phosphine-substituted analogues [Pt2(PR3)2(µ-Cl)2Cl2][PR3= PMe3, PMe2Ph, PEt2Ph, P(C6H11)2Ph, PMePh2, P(C6H11)Ph2 or PPh3]. A wide range of examples has been synthesised and fully characterised by 31P-{1H} and 195Pt-{1H} spectroscopy.
