New thiosulfato complexes of osmium

Abstract

The reactions of the complex [OsO2(S2O3)2]2– with a variety of inorganic and organic ligands have been studied and the vibrational spectra and structures of the resulting compounds are discussed. They include the new complexes [OsO2(S2O3)2L2]2–[L = pyridine (py), 4-tert-butylpyridine, ½ 1,10-phenanthroline or N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine] and [OsO2(py)3(S2O3)]. X-Ray photoelectron data are reported for some of them. The X-ray crystal structure of one of the products, [NBun4][Os(H2O)(S2O3)2(PMe2Ph)3], reveals an octahedral geometry around the osmium atom with the two trans S-bonded thiosulfate ligands adopting a syn geometry with respect to each other, each forming a strong hydrogen bond to the axial aqua ligand.
