Synthesis, characterization, luminescence properties, and electrochemical behaviour of ruthenium(II) complexes with two new bi- and tri-dentate 2-pyridylquinoline ligands

Abstract

Two new ligands, 4-phenyl-2-(2′-pyridyl)quinoline (ppq) and 2,6-bis(4′-phenyl-2′-quinolyl)pyridine (bpqpy) and their ruthenium(II) complexes [Ru(bipy)2(ppq)][PF6]2(bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine)1 and [Ru(bpqpy)2][PF6]22 have been synthesized and characterized by conventional techniques. The IR, fast atom bombardment mass and UV–VIS spectra of the ligands and their complexes are briefly discussed. A study of the luminescence properties and electrochemical behaviour of the complexes has shown that 1 is a good candidate as a luminescent and redox-active species to be incorporated in a polymer polyquinoline-based backbone.
