Bis(η-cyclopentadienyl)-molybdenum and -tungsten chemistry: σ- and η-allylic and metallacyclobutane derivatives

Abstract

Treatment of [{W(η-C5H5)2HLi}4] with CH2[double bond, length half m-dash]CR–CH2Cl (R = H or Me) gives [W(η-C5H5)2(CH2CR[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2)2]. These react with aqueous HPF6 giving the η-allylic salts [W(η-C5H5)23-CH2CRCH2)][PF6]. The salts [M(η-C5H5)2(η-CH2CHCH2)][PF6](M = MO or W) with Na[BH4] give the metallacyclobutane compounds [M(η-C5H5)2{(CH2)3}]. Treatment of [W(η-C5H5)2(η-CH2CHCH2)][PF6] with allyl-lithium gives the compound [M(η-C5H5)2{CH2CH(CH2CH[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2)CH2}](M = W); the molybdenum analogue (M = MO) is prepared by reaction of [Mo(η-C5H5)2Cl2] with allylmagnesium chloride.
