Formation of the blue trisulphur radical anion, S3, in solutions of alkali polysulphides in dimethylformamide, and from elemental sulphur and piperidyl-lithium in hexamethylphosphoramide

Abstract

I.r. and visible spectra identify the blue species in solutions of alkali polysulphides in dimethylformamide (DMF) as S3. Elemental sulphur (S8) is reduced to S3 by secondary amines in hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA). The reaction of piperidyl-lithium with S8 in HMPA has been investigated to determine the stoicheiometry and the nature of the final products.
