Orientational selectivity for the inclusion of acetonitrile in tailor-made macrobicyclic host molecules

Abstract

The first σ–π-interaction between a C–H acidic acetonitrile methyl group and and a ‘π–basic’ host cavity is described based on the X-ray structure of the complex between the host 3 and MeCN; comparison with the structure of the complex between 1 and MeCN shows orientational selectivity for MeCN in the two hosts.
