(±)-Helminthosporal has been synthesized starting from a bicyclo[3.2.1]oct-1-en-2,8-dione which is produced on electrolysis of 3,4-dimethoxy-6-methylphenol in the presence of an excess of (E)-isoeugenol methyl ether.
