Stereochemistry of 1,4-addition of molecular deuterium to 2-methylbuta-1,3-diene over ThO2, MgO, and La2O3

Abstract

Deuteriation of 2-methylbuta-1,3-diene over ThO2 gave 90% of (E)-[1,4-2H2]-2-methylbut-2-ene and 10% of (Z)-[1,4-2H2]-2-methylbut-2-ene with retention of the conformation of the reactant, while over MgO and La2O3 60% of the (E)-form and 40% of the (Z)-form were produced.
