Biomimetic synthesis of nicotine

Abstract

Nicotine is formed at room temperature by stirring an aqueous solution of glutaraldehyde, ammonia, and 1-methyl-Δ1-pyrrolinium acetate in the presence of air, maximum yields being obtained at an alkaline pH.
