Spectrophotometric determination of iron in boiler and well waters by flow injection analysis using 2-nitroso-5-(N-propyl-N-sulphopropylamino)phenol
Abstract
2-Nitroso-5-(N-propyl-N-sulphopropylamino)phenol (nitroso-PSAP) forms a water-soluble chelate with iron. The molar absorptivity of the complex is 4.3 × 104 l mol-1 cm-1 at 753 nm. Iron (4–100 µg l–1) is easily and selectively determined in a flow injection system because divalent transition metals (Ni, Co, Cu, Zn and Cd) at the 500 µg l–1 level do not interfere. The method has an average recovery error of ±1% and the sampling rate is 25 samples h–1. A simple procedure for the determination of iron in boiler and well waters is described.
