BODIPY and N-halamine-decorated covalent organic framework with synergistic antibacterial capabilities for sunlight-powered water sterilization

Abstract

Access to safe water is one of the most effective tools to reduce disease transmission. A BODIPY and N-halamine-decorated covalent organic framework has been constructed, which exhibited highly efficient PDT/chem synergistic bactericidal activity under visible light or natural sunlight irradiation. In addition, a BCOF-Cl@chitosan aerogel was fabricated and used as a model for a continuous flow-through purifier to realize scaled-up natural sunlight-mediated efficient disinfection of E. coli-contaminated water.
