Hybrid transition metal (V, Fe, and Co) oxide/sulfide catalysts for highly efficient overall water splitting

Abstract

Hydrogen is an ideal clean energy source without any carbon emissions and hydrogen production by water electrolysis is also eco-friendly and efficient. Herein we propose a universal strategy for synthesizing transition metal (Fe, Co, and V) oxide/sulfide heterojunctions as highly efficient catalysts. An edge-rich structure, lots of oxygen defects and the variable valence states of the metals boosted the catalytic performance in water electrolysis, and this represents an effective and economical way to synthesise large scale catalysts without noble metals for effective overall water splitting.
