Visual detection of glucose by hydrogen peroxide test strips

Abstract

Glucose detection is of great significance in the fields of clinical analysis and the food industry. Herein, a visual and portable method was developed for detecting glucose via hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) test strips. Once glucose oxidization was catalyzed by glucose oxidase (GOD) to produce H2O2, the color of the H2O2 test strip changed obviously. There is a good linearity for the glucose response in the range of 0.01–0.5 mM, and the limit of detection (LOD) reached as low as 0.02 mM by the naked eye. The GOD-functionalized H2O2 test strip was used to detect glucose in one step within 2 min. The specific catalytic oxidation of glucose by GOD ensured the high specificity for detecting glucose. The cost was calculated as within $ 0.62 per measurement. Therefore, it provides a facile, rapid and low-cost visual bioassay for glucose point-of-care testing (POCT).
