Recent developments in pyrazine functionalized π-conjugated materials for optoelectronic applications

Abstract

The serious threat of global warming has made it necessary to seek alternative sources of energy. In fact, the search for cheap and clean energy is the subject of several research investigations nowadays. Conjugated materials are essential ingredients for modern optoelectronics. Thus the development of new π-conjugated materials has gained significant attention. In particular, pyrazine-based materials are receiving a considerable amount of interest owing to their favorable charge transfer properties and their physical properties. This review mainly focuses on recent research progress in pyrazine derivatives, summarizes the brief synthetic routes and highlights their application in various fields, such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes and field effect-transistors and provides motivation towards their further exploration. The eventual low-cost and potential large-scale production of these optoelectronic devices will represent a great accomplishment of materials science.
