Synthesis of carboxylate-bridged iron–thiolate clusters from alcohols/aldehydes or carboxylate salts

Abstract

A series of novel carboxylate-bridged cyclopentadienyl diiron complexes [Cp*Fe(μ-SEt)2(μ-η2-OOCR)FeCp*][PF6] (2, R = H; 3, R = Me; 4, R = Et; 5, R = Pr-n; 6, R = Ph; 7, R = p-Me-C6H4; 8, R = PhCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH; 9, CH[triple bond, length as m-dash]C) were obtained from alcohols/aldehydes or sodium carboxylates at room temperature. These eight complexes were fully characterized by spectroscopy, and some of them (3, 4, 7 and 8) were further studied by X-ray crystallography. In addition, the electrochemical properties of clusters 2 and 6 are also discussed.
