A microbial biofuel cell with an air-breathing cathode for in vivo glucose sensing applications

Abstract

A hybrid biofuel cell employing baker's yeast and an abiotic cathode was designed and experimented. Using a customized membrane electrode assembly and simple fabrication techniques, the prototype device was capable of detecting various glucose concentrations in human blood plasma, showing strong potential for patch type sensor development.
