Hydrogel formed by a simple squaric acid derivative

Abstract

A new and simple low-molecular-weight gelator containing squaric acid moiety (PhSQ) forms a hydrogel or crystal in aqueous solution depending on the PhSQ concentration. The hydrogelation ability of PhSQ can be enhanced by adding an acid reagent. The hydrogel might consist of bundles of PhSQ whose hydrophilic porous cavities contain water.
