Effective fluorescent sensing of oxalate in water is significant but still remains a challenge. By using indicator-displacement assays, a readily available macrocyclic copper(II) complex was found to show a sensitive off–on fluorescent sensing for oxalate with high selectivity and high binding affinity (>107 M−1) in water at neutral pH.
